Glass lamination means assembling two or more lites of glass permanently bonded under heat with an EVA (ethylene vinyl aceetate) interlayer. Laminated glass or multilayer glass can be used in a wide range of applications due to its high safety characteristics, also complying with present architectural requirements. Interlayers may be clear, opaque or coloured. There are various benefits of laminated interlayer glass: excellent transperancy and long-term aging resistance of the final product.

Safety and resistance

Due to its high safety characteristics, laminated glass is particularly used to manufacture glass floors, balustrades, staircases and canopies: should glass breakage occur, the glass splinters remain firmly bonded to the interlayer, thus avoiding any the risk of injury.

Another important aspect of our daily lives is protection against vandalism and burglary in public and residential areas. Under great impact, the windows, glazings or walls that are made with laminated glass do not shatter and they can be a safe solution when the suitable laminated glass is chosen. The thickness and the structure of laminated security glass depend on the safety standards specified in the building codes.

Structure of the laminated glass

The number and thickness of glass sheets, together with the number of EVA interlayers are chosen according to the size of the laminated glass panel, its use and its required impact resistance.The higher the number of interlayers, the higher its security level. Moreover, glass panels may be toughened prior to being laminated especially for mechaninc fittings (drilled holes, cutouts), thus increasing their resistance.

Besides its high resistance and security, interlayer laminated glass is suitable for multiple architecture and design applications. Glass sheets of various thicknesses or coloured glass panes can be laminated; different fabrics, special prints, coloured interlayers can be integrated between the glass sheets to create decorative effects. Coloured painted glass (according to RAL standard) can also be laminated to provide double sided opaque colour for doors, glass walls or shower enclosures.

Transparent Design recommends using laminated glass with a matte interlayer instead of mechanically sandblasted glass, as this is easier to maintain and to clean and it is stain resistant.
